Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have any more information about yoga you can mail to me?
Sorry, I don't have any more information to mail to you. All the information I have on yoga is contained on my web site. I do list many books, tapes, videos and other web sites that you can investigate to learn more about yoga.
Which style of yoga is best for a beginner?
I think that the Iyengar style is a good one to start with as a beginner. This style makes extensive use of props such as blocks, bolsters, straps and cushions which are very helpful to assist beginners in performing the postures. It is probably the most widely practiced hatha yoga technique in the Western world so it is easier to find a class that uses this style than some other styles. Another style that is good for beginners is Kripalu yoga. It is less concerned with the structural detail of the postures and has been described as "meditation in motion." It emphasizes the student's mental and emotional states as the poses are held, while encouraging a gentle, compassionate and introspective approach. Regardless of which style you choose, I think taking a beginning class from a qualified instructor is the best way to learn yoga.
How do I find a beginners class in my area?
First of all, you could look in the telephone book for any yoga centers close to you. You also could check at local fitness centers, colleges, YMCA's or YWCA's, and hospitals that may have classes. Check in "Yoga Journal" magazine; it has listings of yoga centers and teachers in all different areas of the country. There also are a couple web sites you could check out which have lists of yoga teachers.

Can you lose weight and get in shape by practicing yoga?
Yes, yoga can help you to lose weight and get in shape. There are many different styles of yoga. Most styles of yoga help you to build muscle strength, endurance and flexibility. Some styles such as Ashtanga, Power Yoga and Bikram Yoga are very active and can also be aerobic. One of the benefits of yoga is that it is relaxing and reduces the effects of stress. Doing yoga at times of stress or boredom can help you to resist high calorie snacks and to stick with a diet to help you lose weight. Some people do yoga as their only form of exercise and others combine it with another form of aerobic activity.
